Acne Scar Treatment
Just as there are different types of acne, and different types of acne treatment, there are different types of acne scar treatments. With any type of skin disorder, there comes the risk of scarring. Scarring varies from mild to very severe. The type of acne scar treatment you would use depends on what degree of scarring has taken place. I will outline some of the options when it comes to acne scar treatment in the next few paragraphs. Please consult your dermatologist with questions about the following acne scar treatments.
The first type of treatment for scarring is dermabrasion. Dermabrasion uses a machine with rotating diamond edged wheels to scrape the skin surface. Much like a sander would. The coarseness is selected by the doctor based on the degree of effect the doctor is trying to achieve. When the procedure is complete it will look scraped, and after a few days will form a scab. Once the scab has fallen off the skin will be reddish for awhile before returning to its natural pigment. Dermabrasion is best for shallow scarring.
Laser resurfacing is quickly replacing the dermabrasion process. The laser removes skin so that new skin forms. There are two types of laser CO2 and erbium. Discuss the details of this procedure thoroughly with your doctor; there have not been a lot of studies done on this. Some doctors have attained very good results, while others have not reported such good success. Redness and swelling are the most common side effects associated with laser resurfacing. The redness will last a couple of weeks.
Another popular form of acne scar treatment is the chemical peel. Chemical peels are the application of different acids to the skin that will remove the top layer of skin to allow a new layer to form. This procedure is often repeated several times to attain the desired results. The process takes about 15 minutes and is best for mild scarring.
Punch techniques are another way that acne scars are treated. There are 3 types of punch techniques used. The first being the punch replacement, which replaces a pitted scar with a skin graft, it works like a hair transplant. The second type of punch technique is punch excision, this where the scare is basically cut out and allowed to heal. The third and final type of punch technique is punch elevation. This is where the scar is cut and allowed to rise up to the level of the rest of the skin. The entire scar is not cut completely out, instead it is allowed to float up and heal with the skin.
Augmentation is another acne scar treatment. This is injecting either collagen or fat underneath the scar until it rises to the level of the rest of the skin. Augmentation for the time being is a temporary solution. The injection will last about 6 months. Saline injections may also be an alternative.
If you are ridden with acne scars, discuss these options with your doctor and find out which of these would be best for your acne scar treatment.
